What Miss Daisy’s Driving…
I love old people or however you wish to respectfully refer to them; seniors, elders, superiors, seasoned, senior citizens, the elderly, the aged, grannies, papas, grampies, golden ager, older generation, etc. Ever since childhood, I would get a bit sad when I saw an older person walking down the street by themselves. I remember thinking, “Does someone love them?” – “Are they alone?” – “Does someone help them out?” I still think this way today. Only, as I get older, I will actually start to tear up when I see an older person alone.
It goes the other way too, when I see an old couple at the store, or walking very carefully together in the parking lot, I will pause, “Oh, look at the little lovebirds” and my son (16) just dies every time. He says, “What is your fascination with old people mom? Why do you HAVE to point them out?” and he laughs and pokes fun at me. Or, who ever I’m with, I’ll jab them in the arm with my elbow, “Awww, look at that sweet old couple! Look!”
Nothing has really changed on that front either. My dad (rest his soul) was a fantastic man. My parents are both highly regarded in my mind and heart. Maybe that has something to do with it? They worked so hard and I appreciated it, and still do.
I’m from a suburb of Chicago. A total suburbanite here. Admittedly. Not a city dweller, and not even interested. I don’t live far from the city but I prefer to “visit” there every once and a long while- it’s exciting, but it also stresses me out. Home body, remember? I only mention this because of the following:
My dad had a Buick Century years ago, then they traded it it for a Buick LaSabre. HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED how many older folks DRIVE A BUICK, they are usually TAN/GOLD and all look the same! I see them everywhere, I see them in my sleep for Pete’s Sake!
The kids and I had been out so many times together when my dad was still alive too, we’d see that make and model (SAME “SAFE” COLOR) everywhere we went and would say, “Oh, there goes papa!” So, we’d rush to catch up and it’d be an older gentleman but not my dad!” It happened so freak’n much that we stopped guessing. Is it just me or have you ever noticed the same thing? My mom still drives said car, and every time I see one, which is 10-20 times a day, all over town, I do get a little excited but I’ve memorized her plate number now to quickly rule out if it’s her or not so as NOT to be chasing after it!
This is not to dis older folks, not my intention. Just amazed at how many of them drive a Buick? You might live in the city, might live in the country – but here in the ‘burbs; my gawsh, they are EVERY WHERE!

I always nudge my wife, bringing attention to an elderly couple and say “is that gonna be us?” and she always gives a huge smile with that gleam in her eye.
OLDS-mobile. HA! Mere coincidence? Me thinks
not.
Ha! Sweet Petey Parkour! Is it a good gleam in her eye, or a bad one? I can see me and my old man old, bitching and bickering – that’ll be our old glory days- LOL! We love to bicker some days! And yes, OLDS’mobile- true true true. Never even crossed my mind… GOOD ONE!
Son of a gun, now that you mention it, my parents’ last car was a Buick! LOL. Interesting, too, considering Daddy bought Oldsmobiles (true!) for decades. The Buick wasn’t gold though. Gray seemed to be the choice in OKC at the time.
Gray, Tan, Gold… you know, the “smart” colors. I love it! I do have such a soft spot for older people! I wish my mom would move in with me but she’s not nearly ready for that!
I am amazed how they all seem to drive the same types of cars – Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Cadillacs… heh heh.
I am also amazed at how poor of drivers some of them are… but I won’t go into that.
Yeah, some with Caddies and Oldsmobiles, but around where I live it’s “Buick Power”. Some, sadly should maybe not be driving, I think it’s sad when families have to tell them, “It’s time to hand over your keys” Really sad. Maybe some don’t have families to tell them when it’s time. We have a little old grampie drive through our neighborhood and I KID YOU NOT, he drives under a mile an hour- takes him 10 minutes to get past my house- Zach always tells me about it…… He looks so cute though I just wanna give him a bear hug!
Love the picture.
Yes, old folks and Buicks. I agree. But them Buicks will get up an’ go, I tell ya!
I love seeing older people holding hands. That is the sweetest gesture.
Yeah, my mom has one, I love to drive it, it’s smooth as buttah! *butter* – It’s like driving a big lazy boy down the street, ultra comfy! I do get teary when I see older love birds, it makes me melt!
My father was a car fanatic when he was alive. He would buy a new car every two years. Once he actually bought a car that looked pink in certain light. I don’t think he realized that when he bought it. His last car was a little sporty car. He knew all our customers at our store by what kind of car they drove. I don’t think he ever owned a Buick. He was a Ford man until his last car which was a Mazda Miata.
Your dad sounds like a hoot but I’m talking about the majority here. Like, when they pick it out, they say things like, “Is there enough leg room?” stuff like that. It might just be the suburbanite area I live in. It’s hilarious….
Oh yeah, and it was a gold one!
Gold/Tan fo sho!
Oh my goodness – I love the elderly too and that is the first time I heard that term, “seasoned citizens.” I’ll have to keep that one for future use. But I am totally in agreement with you about the Buicks. In fact, it was a Buick that they talked me into that I ranted about in my post here http://www.vtroom.com/2008/01/10/the-old-lady-mobile/ and I even called it an old lady mobile (I was only 30 years old then). Too funny. I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the buick/elderly connection.
Cannot wait to read that! Ha! Ha! Ha! You’ve been blogging for a while then Teeni? If so, GOOD FOR YOU GIRLIE! It’s nice that someone else has noticed. WE must live in similar neighborhood types… I’m guessing….
That is hilarious that you mentioned that because I was just talking about all the Cadillacs I see with older people driving them
Happy weekend!
Around here, it’s just the mass quantities of Buicks…. all in gold
I LOVE the picture of that woman lighting her ciggy off the birthday candles!! ROFL
eeee-heee-heee! I love it too, I’ve been hang’n onto a few goodies waiting for the right time. My pictures are inspired by Peter Parkour! He’s the shit! So, anyone know what I’m talking about the Buicks? Or is it just in my neighborhood? You wouldn’t believe how many there are. They all look the same and all house older folks. It’s a hoot!
I also think the same things when I see older people all alone. Makes me sad.
I haven’t noticed about the cars though.
BTW You are a featured blogger on my blog, go take a look!
ok!!! Wow, looks like between you and Little Ms Firefly I will be working on 3 tags tonight! WHOOT! WHOOT! I too, get sad for some reason when I see older folks. I’m glad I’m not the only one with these types of thoughts! *Now, I just have to sit back and WAIT for someone out there in the blogosphere to know, to see EYE to EYE with me on this Buick Lesabre thing…… then, I can rest easy
